Volume 14, Issue 4
April 2002
Many thanks to all the local breweries that donated merchandise prizes for the club's 13th Annual Dreadhop & Reggale Competition. A record number of 239 entries were garnered from a wide geographical distribution. Judging went very well thanks to superb organization by Bob Kauffman, at al. The club once again wishes to thank Chris Black and his staff at the Falling Rock Taphouse for their generous support of this important competition. Coincidentally, the dreadhop on March 30th coincided with the first HBA meeting in 1989.
Thanks to the Left Hand & Tabernash Brewing Company for making our March meeting one of the best ever! Dick, Eric and Jeff were all on hand to share with us very ample amounts o f a variety of German and Belgium specialty brews - all handled through their unique distributorship.
The Club's "First Friday Out" is gaining momentum. Oasis was the scene of our April 5th get-together and dedicated to celebrating Craig Agnor's CU doctorate in physics. In time Craig plans to "hop" a fast freight train to Santa Cruz for his next sojourn. Oasis's master brewer Darian joined us & provided some very interesting insights into the various yeast strains he uses for different styles. Our next outing will be May 3rd at the Association of Brewers @ 749 Pearl St - Rooftop weather permitting and in conjunction with National Homebrew Day (May 5th).
STEVE BREEZLY of AVERY Brewing Company will be our special guest at the April 23rd meeting @ the Depot with IPA as the featured style. Steve is Avery's new head brewer, coming to Boulder from Snake River and Lightning Boy Breweries in Montana. He completed the Master Brewers program at UC Davis & is also certified by the rigorous London Institute of Brewing. Steve has been awarded numerous GABF medals while at Snake River.
The Club will again be providing ingredients for our June meeting including an extract Koelsch and an all- grain Pilsner.
The HBA men's softball team in its last game rallied to score eleven runs and some "hardball" defense before losing by seven. Remember that entry fees for the National Homebrew Competition are paid for by the Club and for any second round entries - all costs are paid for by the Club. The conference this year is the weekend of June 21st in Irvine, Texas.
Please note that the Rocky Mountain Homebrewers Rendezvous will again coincide with the Colorado Brewers Festival in Salida, Co. on the Arkansas River. A beautiful large campsite on the Arkansas River has been chosen. The site is 3 hours drive from Boulder and will be held on July 6th . More info will be forthcoming.
Cheers,
Dave
