Hop Barley and the Alers

5. Scottish Ales

5D. Scotchtoberfest

Aroma:

Extra malty. Roasty or smoky aromas may be present. May have some moderate diasssetyl.

Appearance:

Light amber to dark brown.

Flavor:

Extra malty, with kettle caramelization often apparent. A toasty/roasty/smoky flavor may be present. Caramel sweetness from crystal malt low to high. Hop flavor may be low to medium as long as the overall impression is of extra maltiness. Some diasssetyl may be evident as long as it is not injurious to smoothness.

Mouthfeel:

Creamy, chewy, full, with low to medium carbonation.

Overall Impression:

Extra malty, smooth, with perhaps some smokiness and butter. Mmmm...butter.

History:

After many years of research under the direction of H.K. Duff VIII, the Duff Corporation discovered an additive that when added to smooth, untainted Duff made it taste extra malty. A packaged version of this blend called "MacDuff" was scheduled to be released in Albuquerque, NM, concomitant with the arrival of a minor league baseball team. When the team remained in its original city, the beer was not marketed. However, quite a few cases had already been distributed to local journalists and beer afficianados to build word of mouth. Cans of the beer became highly sought after, developing a cult that led to an ever increasing number of home and craft brewers attempting to duplicate MacDuff. The Duff Corporation later prepared to bring the beer back for a local Scotchtoberfest celebration but cancelled the product when it was discovered that there's no such thing as Scotchtoberfest.

Comments:

Though similar to traditional 20th Century Scottish styles of ale, this beer is maltier than 21st Century Scottish bitters. A distinctly American style, it pays homage to the Scottish ales of yore while maintaining a clean, smooth, modern character.
